A look at case management models
The HSJ looks at the Arizona Healthcare Cost Containment System.
“As Anthony Rogers, director of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, puts it: ‘America does not believe healthcare is a right - it is a commodity traded on the stock exchange.’
One specific thing I was in the US to learn about was the Arizona system. The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System is considered to be the most successful of the Medicaid models in the US. Many other states are now looking to emulate it.”
I am unable to comment in detail about this but the basic premise leaves me feeling uncomfortable. It is a cost containment system, not one that promotes health.
Combined with the abdication of responsibility by PCT’s, it does not bode well for the future of the health service, especially in view of the new Commissioning Services Framework currently being procured by the Department of Health.
We will be replicating a failed system to the detriment of both patients & providers.
