Privacy - they have heard of it.

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

To give people a sense of what is going on, this negligence is something I have been predicting ever since I saw the detail of the NHS Care Records plans! More precisely, the inability to understand what privacy & Data Protection mean instead of paying them lip service.
An users perspective.

Security needs to be designed into the system, not added on as an after thought & certainly not depend on the users sense of propriety! This is about as much use as a chocolate teapot!

Bitterness at the VC industry

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

Two and a half years of unsuccessfully trying to raise funds to develop this. Two and a half years of spending hours every day jumping through hoops. Why do I do this when I could work for the DWP verifying “sicknotes”? And thanks to Connecting for Health who managed to destroy any chance of the NHS supporting homegrown developments in the next few years with their farce of an IT procurement scheme.

CRESCENDO ANNOUNCES SERVER-BASED SPEECH RECOGNITION

Dictation software supplier Crescendo Systems has announced a new version of its product suite that will run in a Citrix environment, allowing voice recognition to take place on the server in real time. Crescendo, which uses the Philips SpeechMagic system, says that this means that dictation can be processed remotely or though a web browser, making it ideal for anybody travelling. Costa Mandilaras, president of Crescendo, said that the company “now provides the first dictation and speech recognistion workflow application that brings state-of-the-art speech recognition to Citrix users in the medical and legal field.”

A few basic hints for web users.

Firefox or Opera are two free browsers which have far fewer problems than Internet Explorer. They are not tied in as closely with Windows & therefore not subject to so many security vulnerabilities.
In the case of Firefox, there are extensions which add new facilities to the browser including one to help you check your spelling when you post on here.
Ok, since you asked, one for IE too!

Again, free spelling checkers on Internet Explorer
& Firefox.

If you want to give people an email address to get in touch but don’t want them to have your main address, why not sign up for a web mail address from GMail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, or the tons of other free mail providers. As an extra, most will also screen your mail for viruses.

Speaking of virus checkers & firewalls, if you are using Windows XP, it comes with a built-in firewall which is better than nothing, so is worth using. But free firewalls such as Zone Alarm or Outpost are better.

Free anti-virus software such as Avast, EZ Antivirus, Bitdefender, AVG, Antivir are every bit as good as Norton /
MacAfee etc & usually much more stable.

As for protection from spy ware, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware are all pretty good, you might want to have one or more installed on your system.

Safe online behaviour would include having regularly updated copies of at least one each of the above installed & running on your computer.

Finally an attempt at clinical supervision

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Headhunters are trying to recruit experienced clinical staff from the NHS to advise LSP’s and their sub-contractors on how to adapt their software offerings to NHS processes and to dissipate clinician anger at not being previously consulted. However the efforts appear to be sporadic, limited to a few companies and with an unrealistic view of the skillset & market conditions. Better packages will have to be offered to tempt the right people into taking up these positions.

Hello and welcome to the website of FrontPoint Systems UK Ltd, a consultancy specialising in the brave new world of Medicine, Management & Medical Informatics.

In informatics, our particular focus is in the field of systems design and strategic direction with special attention paid to usability & user interfaces.

What you will find here will be opinions, sometimes strong, on the state of Medical Informatics. I will stick to cogent practical comments & leave the theorizing / future (navel) gazing to others.
