Why the weblog?

I’m a medical doctor working in the NHS, currently a GP.

I have been involved in medical IT for a while, primarily in independent software development scratching my own itches but have also been in contact with & am a keen follower of the industry including all of the LSP’s & CfH itself. I also have a few other business interests, mostly IT related outside of healthcare.

And along the way, I have picked up some knowledge of the way the NHS works & having something of a second career advising people how to do things right. I also spend 4 - 6 hours a day on the net, just keeping track of interesting happenings. So I read a lot, quite a bit to do with work.

And some of those things I do not like & don’t have a problem with making my views known. Not doing so leads to frustration & cynicism, both of which I would like to avoid. Writing these posts also makes me crystallise my thoughts & research the story at hand. I like to analyse the issues in far more detail than is generally available in the media.

This is written from the perspective of someone who has to eat their own dog-food, so if things aren’t right, I don’t see the point in staying mum. So I’m willing to stick my head out & make my case. There will be no anodyne “The sun is shining” posts & hopefully none of the “Why can’t we all just be good friends?” kind either.

There is detail, lots of it & an eclectic choice of subjects though predominantly dictated by what is in the media. It is dense, deliberately so with a surfeit of links, hopefully providing multiple perspectives of a situation.

If I’m wrong, tell me why. I would love to discuss the matter with you. Post away.

From the point of view of business, who would you rather have advising you, someone who just tells you what they think you want to hear or someone willing to take the unpopular step of telling you what they really think, in a reasoned & non-abrasive manner?

As for my philosophy, I am happy to let the following represent me.

“Our business model is only financed by customers. So we have to pay a lot of attention to our customers. When the customer is happy then the worker is happy too and so are the suppliers. Then there should be enough money left for the shareholder. But that is the order of importance,”. Wendelin Wiekdeking.

I have had dealings with a large number of industry players & as a commentator on the industry I can hardly avoid mentioning them. I do not however confuse issues with personalities or the company itself.

But out-spoken views on the website should not be confused with an inability to be diplomatic. Dealing with over a hundred patients a day in all stages of sickness & health in addition to all the assorted complications they bring is a very good training ground.
